Leavers and barcode lists
Posted by bhs on October 19, 2011
I am updating my student barcode lists for borrowing, following the release notes 7.0. The barcode lists are becoming quite long as past students who have left remain on the library system. When I refresh students (B4; R3) should I indicate ‘Y’ next to the option ‘Remove students who have left and have no current loans’? Is this the best way to get around this? If a student comes back will this cause a problem? As a new TL I have not used this option before but the barcode lists are just becoming too long.
Select “Y” to the prompt “Remove students who have left & have no current loans”. If those students later return to your school they will pick up where they left off. All data is attached to their ERN and so when that is transferred back on to your school then even their borrowing record is reactivated. This applies even if your library does not use ERN (student code) as your borrower ID barcode numbers.

Free barcodes

I have downloaded Citrix 12.1, I’ve got the instructions how to save and manipulate the sizing. Now all I need is the ‘code 39 font’ which is apparently found in the SCAN issue for Feb. 2010.
Go to http://www.idautomation.com/fonts/free/#Download_Free_Barcode_Font
You save it to your “Font” folder which is found in the “Windows” folder of your computer.

Barcodes and Ern
Posted by bhs on March 10, 2011
Even if you update you do not have to change to ERNs. It is a function you can choose or not as with any menu function. The School Libraries Unit is recommending changing over to ERNs as it will solve some barcode problems (such as when a leaver re-enrols) and provide consistency of student identifiers across all school applications as well as ease of change over to the [not in my lifetime] replacement of OASIS.
We have been changing over gradually and the biggest pain with the new facility is that it seems to be all or nothing. I have been doing the changeover in a staged way to avoid having to create new cards for the whole school all at once (we do our own library cards). New Year 7 students are all ERNs and as we use a swipe on system for attendance for seniors we have been converting seniors. The new system looks like you cannot do it by Year but have to do everyone at once. I may have to continue using the edit every record individually method to provide the staged changeover I continue to want.
B4 R3 (Student Refresh) with ERN barcodes
Reading the signs, I decided to switch all barcodes to ERN numbers. But when I decided to do a (Student) Refresh, the next barcode offered to me was from the old B00….. series. When I left the barcode field blank, OASIS wouldn’t move on until I had put a number in there.
I cancelled the Refresh and rang the Helpline for an answer, and have someone phoning me back, but I have to go to an appointment very soon, and I am at a funeral tomorrow, so I may not hear an answer until next week.
Has anyone dealt with the same situation? How did you resolve it?
You don’t have to worry, just accept the offer ofthe “next barcode number” even though it begins with B, ‘cos further down you select the “match barcode with student code” as Y = Yes, so they’ll all get their ERN as their Library ID.

Barcode borrower list
Posted by bhs on February 25, 2011
Have just printed off the barcoded borrower lists after having downloaded the new Citrix version.
I managed to do this without a hitch however I have a slight problem with the printed list. The height of each row that lists the names and barcodes is quite short and when I think I am scanning a particular student I end up scanning either the student below or above often.
Does anyone know if there is a way to increase the height of the rows?
If it’s in WORD, format paragraph will let you increase the white space above and below each paragraph.
I tried yesterday (with the help of the very techy computer co-ordinator) to print the borrower barcodes.
They “printed” but then would not scan. (Hod downloaded the notes to follow.)
What are we doing wrong?
I found that the only barcode font to work was IDAutomationHC39M – Laureen pointed us to it at the end of last year -http://www.idautomation.com/fonts/free/
Are you printing the class list? do you have instrucitons for it?
I’ve printed cards but can remember how to do the class list and would really appreciate the instructions!
I was able to print out my borrower list using OASIS and nothing else.It was so easy and exciting!
I jumped onto OASIS this morning and thought I would have a fiddle with B2 A2 – Borrower Barcode Listings. The computer said install Thin Client ? ( I can’t remember the number) so I did so. (This can be done from the welcome screen which is the white screen you see when you click on OASIS from Applications. Then click on Citrix Client Version 12.1 where it says Download) ICT walked me through.
After that I just used B2 A2 and it printed them all out as barcodes for me!
Maybe you all know about this and it’s old news but just in case, I thought I would let you know.
I’ve just done the same, but with the help of detailed notes which were forwarded from the ICT Help Desk. You need to install Citrix Client version 12.0 (usually the CC has to do this), after firstly uninstalling previous versions.

Barcode and Ern numbers

Is there anyone out there who can give me a definitive answer on the issue of ERN versus OASIS for student barcodes?
My SASS who dealt with all this has been replaced by an untrained (wonderful) person temporarily this year. She is now training the untrained person who will be filling the position full time………..
We are still using OASIS barcodes as we still had a good supply of those printed.
Is there a definite need change to ERN barcodes. Is it necessary? Compulsory?
Am ready to deal with next year’s year 7s and don’t know which way to go.
Feeling very confused and uninformed.
You can continue with the current situation but we will eventually all have to change over to using ERN as the student identifiers at some point in the future. It does make sense that there is already a unique number given to each & every student which should be used for all DET identification. Whereas the barcode number is only linked to one site, i.e. your school’s library. Students can & do move away and return to schools and by using ERN as their library ID number your records will always be correct.

Barcode change for a resource
Posted by bhs on November 15, 2010
We have two of the Wimpy Kid series that were accessioned at the same time & their barcodes are securely contacted in place on opposite books. Is there a simple way to just swap those 2 barcodes over?
You’ll need to go to Change Barcode , B4 P1.
The easiest way to do this & not get confused is to do it in 2 stages.
Firstly change the barcodes for both books to 2 other unused barcodes, Confirming the change each time.
Then stay in Change Barcode & you’ll change them back to the correct barcodes that are already attached to the books. But this time instead of entering the “old” barcode (i.e the fake ones that you just gave to the books), press Enter and you’ll be prompted to enter the Accession Number. Enter the accession number of one of the copies and then instead of accepting the “new” barcode offered scan in the barcode that is actually attached to the resource, then C = Confirm.
The reason that you have to do this in 2 stages is that OASIS won’t allow you to give a barcode number that is already allocated to another resource.
The using of the Accession numbers is to ensure that you are accurately allocating the correct barcode to the right resource.
