Cataloguing websites

Posted by bhs on June 7, 2010

I’ve been accessioning websites for some time now (& followed Sue Lacey’s & then the DET guidelines) but there have been a couple of
recent glitches that I’d like to share … for others to be alert.
1. If you have been downloading from the SCIS Monthly updates & then use the Links4Learning special orders, you might get some
duplications… ie OASIS creates multiple copies, not a serious problem but you might want to check & tidy that up.
2. More seriously though, a SCIS website download highjacked a previous book resource entry & actually blended the data so that I had
2 copies of the website title, one at the NF book location & Dewey & one at the WEB website location & its Dewey, PLUS, the data had
the website title, name & publisher & date but included the book’s series entry, had both the book’s subject & the website’s subject
(neither had review notes)… so I logged the IT call & was told I was the second today & it seems that the website’s SCIS number was
the same as the book’s SCIS number, but with an extra digit at the end. SCIS has been informed of the problem created.
SO I’m not advising that you don’t accession websites, just be alert in case of these 2 glitches.
Re The highjacked book… we deleted that copy & manually re-entered it (dealing with the accession number & barcode by re-entering
them, but I guess you could dispose of it, citing the reason & give it fresh accession number & barcode numbers) & then I edited the
website entry to delete the bits of book data.

As I have warned my new assistant… it is good to have clear step by step procedures (Paranoia can prevent problems) but even so, now
& then, OASIS will play games with your head!
