We just had an issue with a Refresh which alerted us to a problem that you all need to be aware of if you still use barcode numbers rather than ERN as student i.d. in the library. You CANNOT re-use old barcode numbers.
The borrower i.d. number that you give the student “belongs” to that student & ERN. If the student transfers to another school, the barcode numberĀ is stored inĀ ERN. If that student then returns to your school a Refresh will give them back their “old” barcode number. If you have re-used the barcode number, i.e. issued it to another student, then OASIS will “hijack” the number and change all the details to the returning student (except the ERNumber). In fact the student will appear twice, once with their own ERN & once with the ERN of the other student. Both will have the same Borrower barcode number. The other student will have disappeared from your borrowers. Any loans that belonged to that student will appear in the Borrower Details of the returning student which has the “Disappeared” student’s ERNumber.
If this happens you will get a message when you perform the Refresh alerting you to “Duplicate Barcodes”.
This problem does not occur if you have changed to ERNumbers for Borrower I.D.s.
