Using OASIS Library as the management system for schools textbooks is not recommended. Here is the quote from the DET “School Library & Information Literacy” FAQs page:
What about text books?
OASIS Library can cope with class sets of text books. However, it is not compatible with the teaching and learning role of the teacher-librarian.
If large numbers of class sets of text books are added to OASIS Library, this would have the overall effect of creating problems with loan limits for students, overdue management, stocktake, and statistical reporting.
This will create problems in providing students and teachers with efficient access to resources supporting the teaching and learning program of the school.
It would also be a source of frustration for users where large numbers of such resources are not available for loan. Issues of responsibility for, and workload engendered, in processing large numbers of resources not available to day to day users would also need to be addressed.
I know that there are some libraries who do take responsibilty for the textbooks (usually under pressure from various faculties), but unless there is adequate increase in staffing to cover the extra work you should resist the imposition. Susan has been given 2 relief days for stocktake of textbooks which is obviously not enough time going by her comment. The management of textbooks is not and should not be the responsibility of the library – each faculty should have a staff member who is in charge of their textbooks and that faculty should be responsible for the management of their textbooks. If you do it for one faculty, the others hear of it and think that it’s a good idea and want the library to do theirs as well.
